We’ll then finish our New Hampshire day with a jaunt to Chesley’s Glory Station to browse their extensive line of country style home goods to hand crafted jewelry. We’re off for a tour of Rockport and Gloucester today. Gloucester is America 's Oldest Seaport. In 1606, Samuel de Champlain came into our harbor and named it "Le Beau Port" or the beautiful port. A number of years later, in 1614, Captain John Smith traveled from Monhegan Island down the coast, ending his journey at Cape Cod . Before that, while passing the cape of land on which Gloucester is now located, he named it "Tragabigzanda" in honor of a Turkish lady who had befriended him when he was a prisoner in her country. Captain Smith then presented a map of the eastern coast to Prince Charles. He named this cape of land Cape Anne after his mother, Anne of Denmark. The name eventually was changed to Cape "Ann". Rockport is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Boston at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula. It is directly east of Gloucester, Massachusetts and surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll stop for lunch this afternoon at Brackett’s where we’ll have our choice of Baked Scrod Casserole or Baked Stuffed Chicken Breast. When you’re finished lunch, you can explore Bearskin Neck. -

Did you know that long ago, lobsters were so plentiful that Native Americans used them to fertilize their fields and to bait their hooks for fishing? In colonial times, lobsters were considered "poverty food." They were harvested from tidal pools and served to children, to prisoners, and to indentured servants, who exchanged their passage to America for seven years of service to their sponsors. In Massachusetts , some of the servants finally rebelled. They had it put into their contracts that they would not be forced to eat lobster more than three times a week. We’ll spend our day at the Holyoke Mall and then visit Springfield’s Forest Park , which is a stage for fantasy light displays during the Christmas holiday season. We’ll drive through the 2.5-mile extravaganza and view over 500,000 lights that are used to create the various displays. A unique display titled “ Seuss Land ,” approved by the Dr. Seuss estate, cannot be seen anywhere else. Approximately 300,000 people visit Bright Nights at Forest Park annually, making it one of the most visited light displays in New England . -
