Gloucester/Rockport
Location: Rockport, MA Price: $76.00
Date(s): 06/14/2014 Time:
Our first stop is the Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House, was the summer home of one of America’s first professional interior designers, Henry Davis Sleeper. Perched on a rock ledge overlooking Gloucester Harbor, Beauport became Sleeper’s retreat, backdrop for entertaining, professional showcase, and an inspiration to all who visited. After Sleeper’s death, Beauport was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCann, who left most of Sleeper’s arrangements and collections intact.

The interior and exterior of the house contain Sleeper’s lifetime collection of curiosities, colored glass, folk art, china, and silhouettes in every nook and alcove. Each of the forty rooms is distinguished by a historical or literary figure, theme, color, shape, or object. No two rooms are the same, with each more visually dazzling than the last. The house is framed by newly restored Arts and Crafts-style terraces that include intimate garden rooms with dramatic views of the harbor.

Visitors to Beauport learn about its architectural evolution, the sources of Sleeper’s inspiration, and how he influenced other designers and popular taste. Get to know Sleeper; his housekeeper, Mary Landergan Wonson; Beauport's second owners, the McCanns; and the house's many colorful guests, who became an integral part of Sleeper’s life.

Then we will depart to Rockport “Bear Skin Neck” eating at Brackett’s Restaurant, where you can order between the Baked Scrod or Baked Stuffed Chicken Breast. When you’re finished eating, you’ll be able to explore the rest of the afternoon in Bearskin Neck, a small neck of land that juts out of the town center into Rockport Harbor. Legend has it that the small peninsula is so-named for menacing bears that early settlers routed onto the neck and hunted.

Phantom of the Opera @ Boston Opera House
Location: Boston, MA Price: $150.00
Date(s): 07/12/2014 Time: 2:00 pm Show
The Phantom of the Opera follows a deformed composer who is a musical genius that haunts the grand Paris Opera House. Sheltered from the outside world in an underground cavern, the lonely, romantic man tutors and composes operas for Christine, a gorgeous young soprano star-to-be. As Christine’s star rises, and a handsome suitor from her past enters the picture, the Phantom grows mad, terrorizing the opera house owners and company with his murderous ways. Still, Christine finds herself drawn to the mystery man.

Both romantic and scary, The Phantom of the Opera is a thrilling night of theater with grand emotions. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, with its beloved signature song “Music of the Night,” sets the mood, but you may also find yourself humming the gorgeous period costumes and simple yet grand sets (even the famous chandelier, which probably falls slower than you’d expect, is a thrill).

We will begin the tour with a stop at Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall Marketplace for lunch (on your own) before heading over to the show. Seats located in the Dress Circle.

Foster's Downeast Clambake
Location: York, ME Price: $72.00
Date(s): 08/05/2014 Time:
A fun dining experience like no other! There’s something unforgettable about Foster’s traditional New England clambakes. Maybe it’s the atmosphere which can only be described as pure, unadulterated fun. Or maybe it’s the food. Our traditional New England clambake is served with award-winning clam chowder. Steamers (soft-shell clams) bursting with flavor. Fresh veggies and tender corn on the cob. And of course the fresh Maine lobster, so sweet and succulent that it practically melts in your mouth. Then again, it could be our people. Our veteran staff that has been preparing and serving our fresh Maine lobsters season after season. Or our resident showman, Leighton Holt, who keeps the crowd entertained with his unique blend of Downeast humor and music. So when people ask, “What makes a Foster’s traditional New England clam bake a fun dining experience: the people, the place, or the food?” Our standard answer is “Ayuh.”

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Cruise
Location: Essex, CT Price: $100.00
Date(s): 09/07/2014 Time:
Essex Steam Train & Riverboat's 2½-hour journey begins at the historic 1892 Essex Station for a 12-mile, narrated round-trip into the heart of the unspoiled Connecticut River Valley - designated "one of the last great places on earth" by the Nature Conservancy. The steam locomotive pulls vintage coaches at 20 mph through the quintessential New England towns of Deep River and Chester. The picturesque countryside includes pristine meadows, a quaint farm, a millpond with waterfall, and trestles and bridges over rivers and creeks. A natural highlight is the undeveloped Selden Neck State Park, accessible only by boat.

Essex Steam Train offers unique access to several coves and preserves, immersing passengers in an on-board eco-excursion. The train travels near the tidal wetlands of Pratt Cove and Chester Creek - - bountiful, natural habitats for birds. Among those typically spotted are Cormorants, Ducks, Swans, Greenland Geese, Blue Heron, Egrets, and Red-winged Blackbirds. In February and March, the majestic Bald Eagle is the star of the show, when it migrates south to the Connecticut River Valley from Canada and Maine.

At Deep River Landing, passengers are escorted onto the Becky Thatcher riverboat for a 1¼- hour cruise along the Connecticut River. The visual serenity of the river valley is on full display from Becky's multiple decks. The deep water, coves, inlets, marshes, wildlife, and rocky shoreline are all at once, simply breathtaking! Just as impressive are the historic sites including Gillette Castle, Goodspeed Opera House, and the Haddam Swing Bridge. Upon Becky's return to Deep River Landing, the steam train welcomes passengers for the return trip back to Essex Station. Then it is off to Oliver’s Restaurant & Taverne for a delicious luncheon before going back home.

Christmas at the Newport Mansions
Location: Newport, RI Price: $67.00
Date(s): 12/14/2014 Time:
The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour these magnificent mansions. Thousands of poinsettia plants, spectacular evergreens, trees, wreaths and fresh flowers and 19th century style ornaments turn the houses and their grounds into a Christmas wonderland. Our first mansion will be the Marble House. For an American house, it was unparalleled in design and opulence when it was built. Its temple-front portico has been compared to that of the White House. It was a social landmark that helped spark the transformation of Newport from a relatively relaxed summer colony of wooden houses to the now legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. The 50-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen.

We will then take a lunch break and bring you to the downtown waterfront where there are several delicious restaurants to eat (on your own) before continuing the tour. On our way to the next mansion we will first enjoy the infamous “Ocean Driver”. This scenic drive, also known as Ten Mile Drive, encompasses most of the southern coastline of Aquidneck Island. This area used to be farmland, but today is one of the most popular Newport RI attractions. Once you're out here, it's very easy to see why. It consists of houses on large lots that overlook the beaches and ocean. It was a favorite picnicking spot of the wealthy summer residents of the mansions on nearby Bellevue Avenue in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of all the homes out there, and the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean they enjoy.

Finally we will end at the Breakers Mansion; a 70-room mansion that has approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of living space. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.
