Washington DC - Passport to a First Class Embassy - Open House Tour
Location: Washington DC Price: $874.00
Date(s): 04/30/2015 - 05/04/2015 Time:
UNLIKE any other event in Washington—and perhaps in the world—you will have a Private Embassy Tour before the doors open to the public. Enjoy dinner inside a foreign embassy and another evening of cultural dining experiences with spectacular views overlooking Washington. The embassies will open their doors on a grand scale! In a single day, domestic and international residents and visitors will be able to experience countries and cultures of the world.

Day 1 – Thursday, April 30
We will stop for a break and lunch (on your own) along the way. We arrive in Washington DC metro area and check into the Westin Arlington Gateway, Arlington, VA (703-717-6200). After resting and freshening up, what better way to begin your embassy weekend than enjoying a welcome dinner inside a foreign embassy as a guest of our host country. Meals Included - Dinner.

Day 2 – Friday, May 1
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Then we depart with our Step-On Guide. Tour Hillwood Museum and Gardens taking the Acoustiguide Audio Tour - This random-access tour includes a narrated 90-minute Mansion tour and time to visit the greenhouses. The mansion is the former home of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. One of the premier art collector's house museums in the United States, Hillwood features Marjorie Merriweather Post's renowned personal collections of fine and decorative arts, including the most comprehensive collections of 18th- and 19th- century Russian imperial art outside of Russia, and one of the world's most important collections of French decorative art. Hillwood's gardens combine twelve acres of lawns and formal plantings with thirteen acres of native woodland beyond and include a circular rose garden; a formal French parterre outside the drawing room of the mansion; a large crescent-shaped lunar lawn; a traditional Japanese-style garden and waterfall representing a mountain landscape in miniature; and a greenhouse for orchids.

Enjoy lunch (on your own) at Epicurean and Company. Tour Dumbarton Oaks Mansion/Museum and Gardens. Dumbarton Oaks was the site of the United Nation’s beginnings in 1944. This Georgetown mansion is now a museum and library for Byzantine studies and botanical history.

Late afternoon visit the National Portrait Gallery. Housed in the magnificent “Old Patent Office Building,” this museum features a unique collection of portraits of famous Americans from the worlds of politics, sports, literature and stage and screen. The Gallery aims to form a permanent collection of portraits of notable figures and includes the Hall of Presidents, which has several official portraits of United States Presidents. This is not your ordinary picture museum. You are walking through history. You will instantly recognize many of the portraits that you have only seen in print or film.

Enjoy Dinner served family style at Carmines in Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C. Our dinner menu includes: Stuffed Mushrooms, Mixed Green Salad, Rigatoni Broccoli in white sauce, Vegetarian Marinara, Chicken Marsala & Mushrooms, and Salmon Oreganato. There will be a Dessert sampler for the table. Also included will be ice tea and coffee.

After dinner continue with an Illuminated Monument Tour. Walk through the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for a spectacular view of the city from the terrace. Two months after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, Congress designated the National Cultural Center as a "living memorial" to President Kennedy, and authorized $23 million to help build what was now known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Stop at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Statue). One of the largest bronze statues ever cast depicts the American Flag being raised on Mount Suribachi during World War II and commemorates all Marines who have died in battle since 1775. The views of Washington from this memorial are spectacular. Continue with an Illuminated Monument Driving Tour: this is a drive-by of the Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument, The White House, U.S. Capitol Building, and other memorials and monuments as time permits. We will arrive at the hotel for the night. Meals Included - breakfast, Dinner.

Day 3 – Saturday, May 2
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning. Depart with our Step-On Guide. Arrive for a Private Group Tour of an Embassy before they open to the public. Welcome to the Embassy Open Houses Tour! Your Passport Embassy Tour includes our experienced professional Guide to help navigate and add a unique informative perspective to the places and embassies you visit today. Your welcome includes a Souvenir Passport to stamp at every embassy you visit. Enjoy lunch (on your own) today while visiting the embassies. Drive through Old Town Alexandria. Alexandria was a once thriving seaport for the young American nation. Today it is a charming historic city with a small-town feel. Some of the historic sites in Old Town include the following: Christ Church, a beautiful example of Georgian church architecture, dating from 1773. Silver plaques mark the pews of George Washington, who served as a vestryman, and of Robert E. Lee. George Washington Masonic National Memorial offers one of the finest views of Washington, plus an extraordinary collection of Colonial-era treasures. The Masonic Memorial is located on the site proposed for the national capitol building. Robert E. Lee’s Boyhood Home- the Georgian townhouse where he lived off and on for 13 years. Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop, run for five generations by a Quaker family, was the second oldest drugstore in the nation until it closed in 1933. Carlyle House and Historic Park. This is the home of John Carlyle, a Scottish merchant who was one of Alexandria’s founders.

Enjoy dinner (on your own) this evening in Old Town Alexandria. Then you will have some Free Time to explore historic Old Town Alexandria. Browse the antique shops, specialty shops, galleries, and boutiques that give Alexandria its quaint, small-town feel. You’ll understand why George Washington chose to live near this once-thriving seaport, years before he chose the site for the nation’s capital. Arrive at the hotel for the night. Meals Included - Breakfast.

Day 4 – Sunday, May 3
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning. Then we will visit Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington. If you haven’t been to Mount Vernon since the 2006 opening of the Ford Orientation Center and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, two facilities with 25 galleries and theaters, it’s time for a visit! Discover the real George Washington with a Hollywood-produced action adventure movie, interactive exhibits, an immersive Revolutionary War “snow” experience, more than 1,000 artifacts, original films, and life-size models of Washington created from a forensic investigation! Visitors may also tour the restored Mansion, its outbuildings, and 50 spacious acres of gardens and grounds, which include the tombs of George and Martha Washington, a memorial to the slaves who worked at Mount Vernon, and a four-acre working farm. And of course there’s the gorgeous view of the Potomac River that can be enjoyed from one of several Windsor chairs on Washington’s piazza! The Gardens of Mount Vernon. George Washington had a green thumb, a trait often lost in deference to his achievements on the battlefield and in politics. In fact, while serving in the Revolutionary War and as the first president of the United States, Washington’s mind – and letters home – frequently turned to Mount Vernon and his ideas for landscape design. His carefully planned gardens featuring unusual 18th-century flowers have been expertly maintained and are on display for visitors.

Enjoy lunch (on your own) today at the Food Court at Mount Vernon. Tour Gunston Hall, the plantation and home of George Mason, author of the Bills of Rights, Statesman and Political thinker. Gunston Hall is famous for its architectural beauty virtually unchanged from the days when his good friend George Washington visited here. The Garden Club of Virginia restored the gardens in 1949-53 around Mason’s original boxwood and is now assisting the site in research to provide additional insight into George Mason’s 18th century garden.

Visit your choice of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums on the National Mall. The National Museum of American History. View the Museum of American History’s complete make-over and renovation! Browse through the new state-of-the-art gallery that offers a spectacular view of the Star Spangled Banner, and view the exhibits that top the list of must-sees for any visitor with a taste for true Americana. See the First Ladies’ inaugural gowns, quilts, cars, locomotives and much, much more.

Visit the National Museum of Natural History, the world’s second most visited museum. The Hope Diamond and dinosaur fossils and the world’s largest African bush elephant top the amazing natural treasures on display along with a live insect zoo. From Neanderthals, ancient civilizations, to life teeming in the planet’s oceans and the coexistence of all creatures on terra firma; it’s all here.

The National Gallery of Art houses an outstanding collection of masterpieces that trace the development of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present. The original West Building concentrates primarily on European works from the 13th century, while its contemporary counterpart, the East Building, highlights works of modern artists.

Visit the National Air & Space Museum. Experience the history of flight at one of the world’s most visited museum, from the plane flown by the Wright brothers to the Apollo 11 command module. Features an incredible collection of aviation and space technology treasures.

Experience something of the unique nature and welcoming spirit of the National Museum of the American Indian. From the American Southwest, Hawaii, Canada, South and Central America you will feel the spirit of these native people. See items from the great American pyramid builders to the beautiful craftsmanship of North, Central, and South America’s indigenous people.

Freer Gallery of Art. The Freer Gallery boast one of the finest museum collections of Chinese art outside of China, with over ten thousand objects dating from Neolithic times(ca. 700-ca.2000 B.C.E.) to the present. While the sheer number of items is impressive, it is their variety and quality that is truly remarkable, with nearly every medium and category of Chinese art represented. James McNeil Whistler’s “Peacock Room” highlights the Freer Gallery’s, world-renown collection of 19th and early 20th century American art.

Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, an international collection features masterpieces of Asian and Near Eastern art from the beginning of civilization to the present.

Visit the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. This donut-shaped building boasts a collection of 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures.

The National Museum of African Art is the only museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to the collection, exhibition and study of the traditional arts of sub-Saharan Africa.

Then we will meet and enjoy an Inspired O Dinner at The Mansion on O Street. Dinner begins with a mixed greens salad with cucumber vinaigrette. Entrée choices are (1) Roasted Chicken or (2) Grilled Salmon, each dinner served with saffron rice and seasonal vegetables. Chef’s choice of dessert. Includes ice tea and water.

Explore The Mansion on O Street’s 100 rooms and 70 secret doors, one of the most unusual properties you’ll ever see. At O Street Museum in The Mansion on O you will have a blast searching for secret doors and exploring the themed rooms like the log cabin, John Lennon suite and Rosa Parks room (she lived there for 10 years). Guests enjoy browsing the collection of manuscripts, books, art, memorabilia, and signature guitars (over 50 including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, U2 & more). Then we will return to the hotel for the evening. Meals Included - Breakfast, Dinner.

Christmas at the Newport Mansions
Location: Newport, RI Price: $67.00
Date(s): 12/14/2014 Time:
The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle you as you tour these magnificent mansions. Thousands of poinsettia plants, spectacular evergreens, trees, wreaths and fresh flowers and 19th century style ornaments turn the houses and their grounds into a Christmas wonderland. Our first mansion will be the Marble House. For an American house, it was unparalleled in design and opulence when it was built. Its temple-front portico has been compared to that of the White House. It was a social landmark that helped spark the transformation of Newport from a relatively relaxed summer colony of wooden houses to the now legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. The 50-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen.

We will then take a lunch break and bring you to the downtown waterfront where there are several delicious restaurants to eat (on your own) before continuing the tour. On our way to the next mansion we will first enjoy the infamous “Ocean Driver”. This scenic drive, also known as Ten Mile Drive, encompasses most of the southern coastline of Aquidneck Island. This area used to be farmland, but today is one of the most popular Newport RI attractions. Once you're out here, it's very easy to see why. It consists of houses on large lots that overlook the beaches and ocean. It was a favorite picnicking spot of the wealthy summer residents of the mansions on nearby Bellevue Avenue in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of all the homes out there, and the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean they enjoy.

Finally we will end at the Breakers Mansion; a 70-room mansion that has approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of living space. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.
